New Jewelry, Part Two: Diane Cotton at The Shoe Hive

We are actively working to up our jewelry game in 2017. Toward this effort, we introduced you yesterday to Mignonne Gavigan scarf necklaces carried at The Hive. But at The Shoe Hive, we have stocked our case with Diane Cotton’s designs.

Diane Cotton has created elegant jewelry out of her Newport Beach studio since 2000. Her eponymous line, known for its long, beaded necklaces with tassels and other vintage components, got its start on a whim. At the time, Cotton was on her final sales call as a rep for Ralph Lauren jewelry when the customer rejected the entire line. Not wanting to end on a sour note, she pulled her own designs from her bag and sold them on the spot.

We encountered Diane Cotton’s designs entirely by accident ourselves. On a recent trip to New York, we paid a visit to a showroom in hopes of finding a new scarf line. We not only discovered beautiful new scarves (which should arrive end of February) but we left with a bag of Diane Cotton’s jewelry to sell! The pieces we brought to The Shoe Hive include a variety of styles and lengths, and incorporated everything from Ethiopian glass beads, vintage Afghan tassels, and Chinese carved glass to brass, mother of pearl, onyx, and turquoise. We hope you love Cotton’s necklaces as much as we do!

Give a Gift, Get a Gift

I have many times said I often feel like I fell in the honey pot (no pun intended) of life. I have been so fortunate as an individual and my businesses are no different. Since we opened the doors of The Hive in September, the support and encouragement from long-time clients and new friends alike have been amazing. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store for spring; we haven’t even received our first shipment of Ulla Johnson, Raquel Allegra or Jenni Kayne yet–lines I know you will love.

So this December we decided to run a new promotion at The Shoe Hive and The Hive in anticipation of our great spring unveiling. We like to call it “Give a Gift, Get a Gift.” Starting December 1 and running through December 29, for every $250 you spend in merchandise we will give you a $50 gift card that can be used on anything by anyone (you can gift it to someone else!) at any time during 2017 at either store.

The gift card is as good as cash though, so you can’t lose it! If the person redeeming the gift card does not have it in hand, we cannot apply the card’s balance to the purchase.

New Arrivals: Jerome Dreyfuss

Jerome Dreyfuss Bags

Never heard of Jerome Dreyfuss? It’s a relatively new brand to The Shoe Hive but it seems our customers are just as smitten as we are. Not sure why these bags are so special? Elizabeth shared her experience with the brand and why we chose to bring them to The Shoe Hive on a couple of months ago. You can read her blog post here. And, of course, as always we encourage you to come check them out for yourselves!

In case you had forgotten, we are open later through the summer months. Monday through Friday, our hours are 10AM to 8PM and on Sunday, 11AM to 6PM. We hope to see you soon!

Spring2ACTion at the Hive: Shopping, Great Style Advice, and Giving

by Elizabeth
Original post on

In many of my love letters to Alexandria, I have written about how inspiring it is to live in a town that is philanthropic. You won’t find another city place more committed to helping others. Everyone has at least one charity to which they either give their time or treasure, or both.

Spring2ACTion is a day that exemplifies the charitable spirit that makes our town so great. It is a 24-hour online giving event that raises thousands of dollars for local charities. This year it will be held on Wednesday, April 20.

A few years ago some stores wanted to get in on the fun, and The Shoe Hive was one of them.

One of my close friends, Kathy Martin, is passionate about a local charity, the Center for Alexandria’s Children (CAC). The work the CAC does is incredibly important…and very difficult. To put it in a nutshell, the CAC is a shelter for the city’s children where they can safely come and tell their story of sexual or physical abuse to the appropriate multi-disciplinary team of professionals.

But the CAC doesn’t stop there. They also focus on education of the public about this abuse and facilitate treatment for families and individuals who have experienced it. They’ve created real, systemic change so that the process works in a better and healthier way for the people who are in it. They roll up their sleeves and give their help, their protection, and their COMPASSION every single day and, because of that, they make kids’ lives safer. And they give HOPE for a much brighter future, which is probably just as important as any of the rest of it.

Kathy, who also happens to be a personal stylist, said, “Hey why not combine the three? Shopping, great style advice, and giving!” So on Wednesday, April 20, stop by The Shoe Hive from 6-9pm and help raise money for a great cause.

Kathy will be on hand giving out free style advice for anyone who likes to talk fashion or has questions about what’s “in style” or whether or not skinny jeans will ever go away, or anything else that strikes your fancy. She’ll help you pick out shoes, jewelry, hats, or even a pair sunglasses.

Here is the best part, The Shoe Hive will donate 20 percent of every purchase you make to CAC.

But it doesn’t stop there! This year, there’s an extra-something-special we decided to throw in to make it ever more fun. For every purchase you make that’s more than $150, you’ll be entered into a raffle to win a mini-consultation from me on your shoe closet AND a $100 gift card for The Shoe Hive!

What to Wear on Christmas Morning

Every Christmas, my kids wake me up at the crack of dawn to open the presents that Santa brought. With wrapping paper sprawled around the tree and my dog digging through bags and boxes, I inevitably still want a picture to capture the moment. I try to brush my hair and throw on some lip gloss and mascara, but, “dressing” for Christmas morning just seems to be a little much.

So, I’ve decided the solution to my problem is to wear super chic and cozy pajamas, which I won’t mind getting my picture taken in. We sell Elizabeth Cotton pajamas, and I love the fabric she uses. They are warm but not too heavy. Her lines are clean and the prints aren’t too overwhelming. This Christmas at six or seven or eight in the morning, opt for stylish pajamas and embrace your early morning picture.

P.S. My friend, Angela, from Bellacara wrote a quick post on Alexandria Stylebook today about Christmas morning makeup. It’s worth a read.
