Although the weather had us fooled for a while, summer is indeed fast approaching. And with summer comes a total change in the way we live our lives, in our rhythms. Summertime means more daylight and more daylight means a greater chance for spontaneous after-work adventures and unplanned shopping trips.
As we near the first day of summer, the staff at The Shoe Hive has already noticed a degree of anticipation in the early evening hours. Alexandrians have already begun to stay out longer, to shop later, and to dine al fresco as the sun sets. Call it FOMO (fear of missing out), but we want to be apart of it all and thus we have extended our hours for the summer! You will now have more time to shop and hang out with us. Stop by after happy hour with your colleagues or before date night with your husband. We will be here and open!
Starting on May 31st after Memorial Day weekend, we will be open from 10am-8pm Monday through Saturday and 11am-6pm on Sunday through to Labor Day weekend. We want you to get the most out of your summer!
Every now and then I leave my house and realize that I feel truly great in what I’m wearing. The outfit represents me perfectly and feels good on. This is one of those outfits.
Apparently, I am not very creative when it comes to poses…

These boyfriend jeans are my very favorite Citizens from eons ago. I wear them at least once a week and I live in fear of the day the fabric wears so thin it rips. (I will just get them patched.) The good news is that The Shoe Hive is going to start carrying Citizens for Humanity denim. In fact, the product should be in store by the time this publishes on Monday. While this exact style has since been discontinued, my love for the brand survives and I will be stocking up on summer styles including a distressed boyfriend, skinny crop, and even a denim jacket!
Along with my favorite jeans, I am known at the store and among our employees for layering as much and as often as possible. I have a difficult shape to dress–I am very pear-shaped–and I find that by layering lightweight pieces one on top of the other they effectively mask the twenty-inch difference between my waist and my hips. This particular way of dressing is also incredibly comfortable, which to me is key.
Of course, not everyone is into layering this way, but both tops I am wearing can be worn on their own as well. The Shirttail Tee by new-to-us The Great (more on that new line coming soon) is super cute worn with skinny jeans and a slip-on sneaker. And the Tank Dress by Sundry (worn as the bottom layer) works well as a dress, a tunic, and a coverup! In building a functional wardrobe, the goal is to buy pieces that will work hard–meaning that they can be dressed up or down, worn on their own or layered with other pieces. We strive to carry shoes and clothing that you will find yourself wearing over and over again, season after season. These pieces definitely fit the bill.
If street style blogs have confirmed anything this year, it’s that loafers are a stylish staple right now. Looking for a pair of your own? The Shoe Hive is always well-stocked in loafers with styles ranging from comfortable and easy-to-wear to luxurious and on trend. And they are available in a variety of price points. Keep scrolling to see and shop the shoes you’ll covet this season.
When you think about it, The Shoe Hive carries a ton of brands. And for each brand there is a rep. Sometimes, Elizabeth and I are confused as to why a certain rep is matched with a certain brand–they just don’t seem to fit. But every now and then a rep is the veritable embodiment of his or her brand, and Hilary is the latter. Perfectly elegant and well-spoken, she carries herself with the confidence that comes only with experience and expertise. Her style is classic with a twist, and always feminine. This indeed makes her a perfect fit for Dee Keller, a brand we recently wrote about on AlexandriaStylebook.com as being a major design crush of ours.
Hilary always greets us with a big smile and a soft southern drawl. She is easy to work with, quick to respond, and in everything and ever way a total class act. Dee Keller is lucky to have her!
Below, Hilary answers a few questions about her and her job.
Dee Keller (left) and Hilary (right) at Hilary’s wedding.
1. What brand do you represent?
2. How long have you worked there?
3. What city is your brand based out of?
4. How long have you worked in this industry?
I have worked in the Fashion Industry since graduating from LSU with degree in Fashion Merchandising and minor in Business. In college I interned in NYC with Mint by Jodi Arnold which confirmed my love for the industry. I went on to work on the Retail side as manager and assistant buyer. From there I moved into wholesale with Dee Keller. In total it has been 7 years.
5. Favorite shoe/piece of all time?
I would have to say, my wedding shoes. The Scheffy (my new Last Name) was created for my wedding. It is the perfect heel height and classic evening shoe!
6. Best part of your job?
Traveling and working with all of my accounts across the country!
7. If you weren’t in fashion, what would you be doing?
Wow that is a good question! My husband is a residential contractor so I would probably be working in interior design on his projects. I also have my real estate license!
8. How do you spend your free time?
Spending time with my husband, family and friends. I am a huge beach lover so we travel to the Florida panhandle quite frequently.
9. Predict the future: What will be the next big trend?
I leave that up to my expert boss, Dee Keller!
10. What’s in? What’s out?
In my opinion, sky high heels are out and everyone is moving towards a heel height that is more wearable in your everyday life. Most of our heel heights stay at 90mm.
11. Heels or flats? / Dresses or jeans?
I am 100% a flat sandal and dress girl! Living in Louisiana, I get to do that at least 7 months out of the year!
12. Why should our customers buy your [shoes/clothes]?
Dee Keller offers a unique product where you can be on trend without stepping too far out of your comfort zone! For an Italian made product the price point is great, too!
Similar to Twine and Twig, The Beach People is a brand I have followed and obsessed over on Instagram for several years. Unlike Twine and Twig, however, I had never thought of bringing the brand’s product to The Shoe Hive until Elizabeth stumbled on it and thought I was crazy for never having suggested it! Within a week, we were unpacking boxes of The Beach People’s towels and totes.
What’s so special about The Beach People?
The Beach People was founded in the summer of 2013 by sisters Emma and Victoria. (It just so happens that Twine and Twig was founded by sisters, too!) They make beach essentials that are designed to bring luxury and leisure to your seaside adventures and are inspired by their own beach travels to places such as Morocco and Montauk. The towels are hand drawn, designed in Australia and 100% made of the finest cotton. The original “roundie” is oversized and ultra soft–you will never buy another rectangular beach towel again!
(More styles available in store. All towels sell for $110.)
We opted to get a handful of The Beach People totes as well. While less familiar with them, the brand promised a sturdy canvas tote with soft leathery details and zippered compartments for wet clothes and other bits and bobs. The Beach People promised, and delivered! The unique shape of the bags makes them ultra-functional and even more stylish! ($99, all three colors.)
Finally, we couldn’t leave out the kiddos. With two unique child-oriented designs, these smaller sized round towels will make naps on the beach this summer much more appealing to your little ones!
(Kids towels sell for $79.)
This Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15 we are putting a customer favorite on sale to help you get ready for warmer weather! All Sundry clothing will be Buy One, Get One 50% Off! Buy a pair of pants and get half off the matching top. Buy an oversized shirt to wear on its own and a tank to layer underneath it for 50% less than the original price. It’s our first BOGO sale but we’re excited! It’s about time to start stocking up on summer staples!
This is us before we started carrying Rag and Bone…
…and this is us after we started carrying Rag and Bone.
From its origins in New York in 2002, Rag and Bone instantaneously distinguished itself by combining the founders’ British heritage with directional, modern design. Today, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville’s brand has become synonymous with innately wearable clothing and shoes that meld classic tailoring with an edgy yet understated New York aesthetic.
Inspired by a desire to create beautifully constructed pieces, with no formal fashion training, the expats immersed themselves in the time-honored techniques of supremely skilled, local manufacturers at some of the oldest factories in the country. The importance of quality, expert craftsmanship and attention to detail resonated deeply, informing Rag and Bone’s core philosophy.
With a downtown sensibility, signature clean silhouettes and an inherent integrity – each piece is impeccably crafted from the finest materials available and approached from a form and function design standpoint – Rag and Bone continuously redefines urban style.
The four styles we currently have in store are early deliveries of the brand’s pre-fall collection. (Fashion is silly, isn’t it?) With two sandals and two booties, you can choose whether you want to start wearing your new Rag and Bone shoes this summer or this fall. Either way, the time to shop for them is now!
