A Meaningful Message

I’m not going to lie–I understand that by owning a shoe store I am not saving the world. I do realize that much of the globe’s population is actually shoe-less. But every now and then, I am reminded that I love what I do, and this recent Facebook message from a Shoe Hive fan makes it all worth it:

Dear shoe hive, throughout my tour in Afghanistan viewing your shoes/sales/latest fashion has become a way for me to connect back to “normal.” Thank you. When I get back to DC I’ll definitely visit your store.

Thank you. So much.

New to the Hive: Stuart Weitzman

The Shoe Hive is excited to announce the long-awaited arrival of Stuart Weitzman on its shelves. Yes, others in the area carry Stuart Weitzman. Yes, you can find them at department stores and other local boutiques. But there’s a reason–Stuart Weitzman’s shoes are really that good. So, we trust that your loyalty will remain with us when the time comes to give the iconic 50/50 boot a go or you are in the market for a basic nude pump. Happy shopping!

Hunter Outerwear: A Worthwhile Investment

by Tess

With Winter officially on its way, I have started to retire my tank tops and am looking forward to cowl neck sweaters; though, there is one item I have hunted for for quite some time: a stylish yet practical down jacket.

When I was seven, my mom bought me a silver, short, puffy down jacket from GAP that I referred to as my “marshmallow coat.” I have retired that silver gem of a coat, but I proudly wore it until there were holes and it turned slightly brown. Now that I am twenty-three, and I am not sure how to pull off looking like a marshmallow, I have struggled with finding the right balance of warmth and style when it comes to Winter jackets.

That being said, I was ecstatic when I walked into The Shoe Hive earlier this week and discovered that they were now carrying Hunter jackets! I am a huge fan of Hunter’s rain boots that have kept so many of our feet warm during the dead of Winter, so it made perfect sense that the popular brand would make such efficient and good looking outerwear.

Although somewhat pricey, this is an investment that I can have for quite some time. Like my silver GAP puffer jacket, it is something I will wear until there are holes, and I don’t have to worry about it turning brown. Plus, look at that fur trim hood, how could I say no?

The Butter Story (and my October shoe pick)

There is one thing I have learned in my 10 years in business is that is easier to do business with people that think like you think and are inter-personally pleasant. That’s especially true with the people behind our great shoe designer lines and no other brand has been a better friend to The Shoe Hive than Butter.

I met Lee 10 years ago when we carried Cynthia Rowley shoes. A few years later she started her own company, Butter and the rest is history. Her mom, Irma, does all the books and as many of you know my dad owns half of The SHoe Hive and is my accountant.

The Butter line continues to be one of our bestsellers. It’s just the perfect combination of comfort and class. There is nothing else out there like Butter and they only sell to small boutiques like ours.

When you enter the showroom, it is hard to choose among a slew of beautiful shoes. I could open an entire Butter store.

So, not only are these shoes ridiculously good and perfect for my 10-year anniversary, I mean they are gold glitter. But they also represent one of the things I like best about owning my own business: interacting with other admirable small businesses and making long-lasting friendships.
